Open for signatures

On 23 October ‘ECI for a Water-Smart and Resilient Europe’ started collecting signatures.

The initiative organisers aim to create an action plan for water by elevating water resilience to the same priority as decarbonisation. They focus on water-efficient industry and agriculture, skills for a water-smart economy and the right to clean and safe water and sanitation.

Initiative updates: Status of support per initiative

To be considered by the European Commission, citizens’ initiatives require 1 million valid signatures, and minimum thresholds reached in 7 EU countries.

Several initiatives reached the following significant milestones.

New ECI communication materials featured in multilingual webinar

New resources – especially the ‘ECI Advocacy Handbook’ – are available on the communication materials page of the ECI website. The ‘Advocacy Handbook’ was a key feature of a multilingual webinar given to local and regional authorities on 17 October. The webinar presented tools of citizen engagement at EU level, including resources to make the European Citizens’ Initiative better known.

Tip: ECI communication materials are available in all official EU languages. Change the language next to the search bar.

From the ECI Forum

ECI Forum webinar recording

Did you miss the ECI Forum’s webinar on 22 October? No problem - the recording is available!

The ECI Forum discussed ‘What to consider before using the ECI to achieve your goals’. They examined the European Citizens’ Initiative, its impact, and how it differs from other democratic mechanisms such as petitions, consultations, and citizen assemblies. Watch the recording.

New blog: Summer workshop generates new ideas

Mascha, a social work student from the University of Applied Sciences Landshut, and Nikos, a medical student at LMU Munich, met at the 2024 Summer Academy's "Civic Engagement on the EU-level" workshop. In the ECI Forum’s latest blog, they discuss the ECI and the importance of active participation in shaping EU policy.

ECI Ambassadors: Activate your inspiration

Throughout the year, ECI Ambassadors spread the word about the ECI in their local context. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing examples so you can get inspired to #EUTakeTheInitiative!

  • Katerina Roumelioti and Europe Direct Central Macedonia, Greece:

For International Democracy Day (16 September), a stand on the ECI was developed for the Thessaloniki International Fair. A large banner, videos, print publications, etc. were used and visitors who contributed to a ‘book of initiatives’ were given an ECI-branded coffee mug. These activities were also featured in social media and in an online magazine article.

  • Alexandre Jorge from Portugal:

Published an op-ed about the ECI in a regional newspaper for Porto. He also is active on social media – especially encouraging young people to share stories about why they are supporting citizens’ initiatives and inviting others to do so too.

  • Karl-Hendrik Pallo, Estonian Cooperation Assembly & Rahvaalgatus:

Gave a presentation on ‘teaching about democracy and the ECI’ to a group of teachers during a summer school series.

  • Philippe Ternes from Luxembourg:

Presented information about the ECI at a ‘Project Design Forum’ which gives people, organisations, associations, municipalities and other actors the chance to jointly design projects and collaborate on project applications.

Thank you and keep up the great work!

New ECI Ambassadors: Welcome!

We’ve welcomed four new ECI Ambassadors to our network recently.

All the new members come from the Europe Direct Centres network.

  • Austria: Europe Direct Carinthia
  • Finland: Europe Direct Pohjois-Satakunta
  • Greece: Europe Direct Central Macedonia
  • Sweden : Europe Direct Sydskåne

The ECI Ambassadors help make information about the ECI available at national and local levels and they empower citizens to make use of their EU citizenship rights.

Meet all the ECI Ambassadors.

The EESC brings the European Citizens’ Initiative outside Brussels

On 4 October, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Ad hoc Group on the ECI organised a debate on "The European Citizens’ Initiative – State of play in Croatia" in Zagreb.

The objective was to discuss with Croatian stakeholders about their experience, views and ideas, and to raise awareness about the ECI tool.

It was the first “going local” event of this kind, and the debate was followed by a walk in the city center of Zagreb during which the ad hoc group members handed out the EESC’s popular European Democracy Passport to passers-by.

Visit the EESC webpage and check the presentations, photos, recording and related documents.
